Volleyball Falls In Tight Match Against Defending League Champs
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate University sophomore middle blocker Stormi Gale (Richmond, TX) racked up 16 kills to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-0 win over the Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-21, 31-29 and 25-21 to improve to 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Sophomore outside hitter Heather Myklebust (Sugar Land, TX) added 13 kills for the Bulldogs, while sophomore outside hitter Lauren Billo (Orland Park, IL) chipped in nine kills. Freshman setter Liz Willis (Raleigh, NC) handed out 38 assists to go along with nine digs. Freshman libero Maggie Malone (Chicago, IL) racked up a match-high 23 digs.
Senior middle blocker Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) led the Catawba attack with 15 kills. Senior outside hitter Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) added 12 kills to go with 10 digs. Freshman outside hitter Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) chipped in with 10 kills for Catawba. Freshman setter Megan Courson (Statesville , NC/W. Iredell HS) handed out 36 assists for the Tribe, while junior libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) led the way with 21 digs.
Catawba jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first set, getting a kill from Meeks followed by two Wingate attack errors and an ace from freshman middle blocker Taylor Doss (Boonville , NC/Starmount HS). A kill from Gale made it 15-9, starting a 10-0 run. Malone served 10 consecutive times for the Bulldogs while Gale had four kills in the spurt that gave Wingate an 18-15 lead. Catawba had the answer, scoring four consecutive points to take a 19-18 lead on a kill from Griffith.
A kill from Willis tied the set at 19. Wingate took the lead on a Catawba error. The Catawba Indians tied the set at 20 on a kill from Powers. Wingate scored the next three points, starting the flurry with a kill from sophomore middle blocker Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, KY). Myklebust added a kill and a block to make it 23-20. Billo finished the set with a kill.
Catawba once again got in front in the second set, taking a 20-16 lead on a kill from Powers. A Bloemer kill cut the lead to four at 21-17. Catawba stretched the lead back to six when a Meeks kill made it 23-17. Wingate had the emphatic answer, scoring the next five points to slice the lead to one. Billo got it started with a kill. Gale followed with three straight kills to go along with a Catawba error. The Catawba Indians took a 24-22 lead on a kill from Meeks. The Bulldogs again fought back, getting a kill from Billo and an ace from Malone to tie the frame at 24-24.
A kill from Gale gave Wingate a 25-24 lead. A Wingate error tied the set at 25. The teams would trade points until a kill from Billo gave Wingate a 30-29 lead. On the next play, Billo finished the set with a kill for the dramatic 31-29 victory.
