Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime Playing Final 35 Minutes With Nine Men
MARS HILL, NC -- Colin Nannery (Falls Church, VA) scored on a through ball from Jamal Wiggins (St. Thomas, Trinidad) eight minutes into the first overtime period to lead Mars Hill to a 1-0 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. MHC improves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-6 and 0-1.
Catawba played the final 27 minutes of the contest two men down after they lost a pair of players to red cards at the 70:59 mark. MHC out shot Catawba 37-6 and had eight more (11-3) corner kicks than their opponent.
Sean Merfeld (Alpharetta, GA) played the entire 97:53 in goal for MHC and picked up his second shutout of the season while making two saves. Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) also played the entire match in goal for Catawba and made 15 saves.
“I was very proud of the effort of the players remaining on the field,” stated Catawba Coach Craig Turnbull. “We had some chances even down two men. We had some decisions that didn’t go our way, but the result shows we can be in the conference race at the end.”
