Nichols Lifts Women's Soccer to Win on Late Penalty Kick

SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Lainey Nichols (Frederick, MD/Middletown HS) converted a penalty kick with just over 12 minutes to play to lift host Catawba to a 3-2 win over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Frock Field.  The win improves the Catawba Indians to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 4-4-3 and 0-2.

Nichols picked up the game-winner after Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) was brought down in the box at the 77:40 mark.  Lion keeper Becca Sellars (Loveland, OH) guessed correctly diving to her right, but Nichols’s shot snuck inside the left post.

Catawba had to rally for the win after scoring first, just 1:51 into the match.  Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS) had a header blocked, but Wilhelm was able to collect the rebound and fire in a goal from eight yards out.  The Lions tied the game in the 37th minute when Abby Martin (Greer, SC) picked off a Catawba clearance pass, dribbled past Lady Indian keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) and scored into an empty net.

Webster would come up big in the second half, making five of her seven saves after the break.  Shannon O’Keefe (Buford, GA) was able to give Mars Hill a lead just three minutes into the second half, but Webster stopped two point blank chances to keep Catawba within a goal.

Freshman Jessica Schwertner (Mint Hill, NC/Covenant Day) pulled Catawba even in the 55th minute as she found the net from just inside the box.  Sellars kept the match tied with a save in the 68th minute, but Catawba picked up the win on the penalty kick by Nichols.

Catawba held a 14-11 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.  Sellars had five saves for the Lions.

“We talked as a team that we have to comeback from a losing situation to grow up,” said Catawba Coach John Cullen.  “Today we did.  We found it within ourselves to get it done.”
