Powers Sets Career Kill Mark As Volleyball Upsets Lander
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) became Catawba’s all-time kill leader in a four-set win over visiting Lander in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improved to 8-6 overal winning by the scores of 20-25, 25-20, 26-25 and 25-17. The Bearcats fall to 13-4.
Powers shared match honors of 16 kills with fellow senior Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayett HS). The middle hitter now has 1,582 kills, surpassing the old mark of 1,573 set by Heidi Albright. Griffith moved to fourth on the all-time chart with 1,380 career kills.
Lander jumped out to a lead, taking the opening set. The Bearcats turned around a 12-11 deficit with a five-point run. Mallory Waski (Keystone Heights, FL) had two kills and a block in the run. The Lady Indians pulled within 18-16, but another run by the Bearcats, including an ace by Magi Nottingham (Indianapolis, IN) pushed the margin to 22-16. A kill by setter Candace LaRocca (St. Louis, MO) ended the set.
Catawba trailed set two as late as 16-12 before catching fire. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) had a an ace that set off a seven-point run that put the Lady Indians up 21-17. Powers later served two aces to get Catawba to the set point which was recorded on a kill by Griffith.
The Lady Indians jumped out quickly with 4-0 and 8-4 leads in set three. Lander would tie the set at 9-all and Powers delivered her record kill for a 10-9 Catawba lead. A Kendall Eayrs kill (Sacramento, CA) gave the Bearcats a 16-13 lead, but three straight Catawba points, capped by a Powers kill tied the set.
A kill by Griffith gave Catawba a 22-18 lead only to see Lander reel off four straight points to pull even at 22-all. The teams would trade points from their with Catawba taking one-point leads on two kills by Griffith and one by Taylor Doss (Booneville, NC/Starmount HS) for a 25-24 lead. Lo would get the final point on a kill for the set win.
Catawba would score the first four points of the final set and bolted to a 10-2 edge. Lo would give Catawba a 20-10 lead on a kill before Lander rallied to within 21-15. A kill by Griffith and a block by Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) gave Catawba a 23-16 lead and Lo ended the match on a kill.
Powers served five aces and added five blocks to go with her 16 kills. Lo had a team-high 17 digs with eight kills and five blocks. Freshman setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) delivered 47 assists for Catawba. Kay Stewart (St. Louis, MO) paced Lander with 11 kills and six blocks. Kerri Sorensen (Maple Grove, MN) had 10 kills. LaRocca provided 37 assists.
