First Five Minutes Doom Women's Soccer in Loss to Pembroke
PEMBROKE, NC -- Host UNC Pembroke scored twice in the opening five minutes and held on to defeat Catawba 3-2 in women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Grounds. The win improves the Braves to 8-1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-3.
Britney Joiner broke in on the Catawba keeper less than two minutes into the contest to put UNCP up quickly. Melanie Cobb would add a goal at the 4:23 mark for a 2-0 edge.
Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS) pulled one goal back for Catawba in the 27th minute, but the Braves regained a two-goal edge on a tally by Brittany Greaves at the 33:43 mark. The scoring outburst in the opening half continued as Leala Ghorbani (Highlands Ranch, CO/Highlands Ranch HS) connected on a free kick in the 42nd minute to trim Catawba’s deficit to 3-2.
Catawba would hold a 9-6 edge in shots in the second half, but could not deliver a tying goal. Chelsea Binder (Woodstock, MD/Mount Hebron HS) had four saves in goal for the Lady Indians. Whitney Beverley stopped three shots for UNCP.
“It was a crazy five minutes to start the game,” said Catawba Coach John Cullen. “We dug ourseslves to big hole, but we settled down and got back into the game. We came on very strong in the second half.”
