Softball snaps slide, sweeps Rio GrandeSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College snapped a record 17-game losing streak by sweeping a softball doubleheader from visiting Rio Grande on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 8-3 and 5-0. Catawba improves to 12-22-1, while the Redwomen fall to 3-7. Catawba returns to Newberry on Thursday to complete play halted by rain on Tuesday. Freshman Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) went 4-for-4 with three RBI in the opener to lead the Lady Indians. She drove home a run in the first and second innings and along with a two-run by Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) it helped Catawba build a 5-0 lead. That was enough for Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD), who scattered eight hits over seven innings, allowing three run and only one earned. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) delivered three hits, while Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) added two in the win for Catawba. Carrie Laufer (Gahanna, OH) and Tangy Laudermilt (Middleport, OH) each had two hits for Rio Grande. Freshman Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the nightcap for Catawba, but settled for a two-hit shutout. Carrie Reid (Minford, OH) led off the seventh with a solid single to left and Amanda Mitchell (Lucasville, OH) added a infield single for the Redwomen with two outs. Mitchell had reached on a walk in the second and Reid on an error in the fourth as the only baserunners of the day, Catawba scored its first run in the third as Griffin stole home as part of a double steal. The Lady Indians would add four insurance runs in the sixth. Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) drove home a run with a groundout and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) added a RBI single. The final two runs scored on a wild pitch and an error. Griffin and Myers each had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap, while Wilson improved to 6-4. She added three strikeouts in recording her second shutout of the season. Handy had three stolen bases in the second game and four in the doubleheader. #######
