Powers Posts 20 Kills as Volleyball Knocks Off Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba won its third straight match, knocking off visiting Mars Hill in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym, winning by the scores of 25-11, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-16. Senior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) recorded 20 kills to help the Catawba Indians improve to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. The Lions fell to 6-8 and 1-5.
Joining Powers with double-digit kills for Catawba was Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) with 10. Powers added three blocks, while Lo had 14 digs. Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) had 15 digs and seven kills with setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) picking up 41 assists and three blocks. Freshman Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) had a career-high nine kills.
Evie Tafunai (Edwardsburg, MI) paced Mars Hill with 14 kills and added nine digs. Jenna Luke (Mishawaka, IN) had nine kills and 10 digs, while Brittany Enloe (Bat Cave, NC) served up three aces.
Catawba won the opening set, pulling away early for a 13-6 lead. Powers had two kills and Lo an ace in a run that pushed the margin to 21-10. Jasmine Chunn (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) and Courson each had a kill and paired for a block as the Lady Indians scored the final three points of the set.
Mars Hill trailed 14-9 in set two, but rallied with a 7-2 run that was capped on a kill from Traci Teague (Ramseur, NC) to get even at 16-all. Catawba stayed in front on a kill from Powers and a Lion attack error at 18-16, but the Lions used a four-point run to grab a 20-18 edge after a kill from Enloe. An ace by Enloe and a kill by Tafunai pushed the Mars Hill lead to 24-19 and the set ended on a service error.
Catawba got out early in set three following an ace by Lainey Edwards (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) and two kills by Powers. A block by Powers and Courson gave Catawba a 9-3 edge. Powers added a kill to give Catawba a 17-11 advantage then Mars Hill battled back. Kills by Teague and Tafunai along with an ace by Enloe keyed a run that gave the Lions a 19-18 lead.
Mars Hill went up 21-19 on a kill from Luke, but kills from Meeks and Lo tied the set at 21-all. Meeks broke a 22-all tie with a kill and Tiffany Andrassy (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson HS) followed with an ace for a 24-22 Catawba lead. Luke staved off one set point on a kill, but the Lady Indians on the set on a service error.
Catawba ran away the fourth set. Powers had three kills for an early 4-1 edge which grew to 14-4 after three consecutive kills from Meeks and an ace by Courson. The lead moved to 24-9 before a late run by the Lions which included two kills and a block from Teague before a service error ended the match.
