Catawba qould find the back of the net at the 77:53 mark when Suarez took a cross from Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and had just the goalie to beat to net her fifth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs had one more chance with two minutes remaining, but a shot from Kelly Adams (Matthews, NC) from just outside the box was saved by Webster. Wingate held an 11-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Webster racked up five saves on the afternoon for the Catawba Indians, while Wingate goalkeeper Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, NC) collected one save for the Bulldogs.
“Our young team is making real good strides and growing up quickly,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “I was very proud of our senior’s performances, but behind that all our young players were committed and spirited. Lena [Suarez] showed fantastic ability on the goal. It was a good conference win on the road against a team having a good season. I asked the team to show some character as we start our road conference games and couldn’t have been more proud of their effort tonight.”
