Women's Soccer Takes 1-0 Win Over Wingate

Suarez nets team-leading fifth goal in victory

WINGATE, NC -- Freshman Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS) scored with just over 12 minutes remaining to give Catawba a 1-0 win over host Wingate in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Wingate Soccer Complex.  The Catawba Indians improve to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-4 and 0-2.

The Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead in the first half, but Julie Zielinski’s (Erie, PA) shot hit the crossbar and the rebound shot from Kerstin Williams (Summerville, SC) was saved by Catawba freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkington HS).

Zielinski had another shot hit the crossbar at the 39:49 mark.  Wingate held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first frame while each team registered one shot on goal.

Paige Harrington (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle HS) looked to give the Lady Indians the lead in the 73rd minute, but her shot hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.  Catawba qould find the back of the net at the 77:53 mark when Suarez took a cross from Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and had just the goalie to beat to net her fifth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs had one more chance with two minutes remaining, but a shot from Kelly Adams (Matthews, NC) from just outside the box was saved by Webster.  Wingate held an 11-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Webster racked up five saves on the afternoon for the Catawba Indians, while Wingate goalkeeper Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, NC) collected one save for the Bulldogs.

“Our young team is making real good strides and growing up quickly,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen.  “I was very proud of our senior’s performances, but behind that all our young players were committed and spirited.  Lena [Suarez] showed fantastic ability on the goal.  It was a good conference win on the road against a team having a good season.  I asked the team to show some character as we start our road conference games and couldn’t have been more proud of their effort tonight.”
