Ghorbani's Last-Second Goal Gets Women's Soccer 1-1 Tie at LR
HICKORY, NC -- Defender Laela Ghorbani (Highlands Ranch, CO/Highlands Ranch HS) scored on a free kick with six seconds remaining in regulation as Catawba gained a 1-1 tie with host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on a rainy Wednesday night at Bears Field. The Catawba Indians now stand at 8-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the SAC. The Bears are 9-3-1 and 1-1-1.
Catawba trailed for most of the match after Lenoir-Rhyne took the lead in the 10th minute. Freshman Laura Linehan (San Diego, CA) scored on a header that deflected off Lady Indian keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS).
With seconds ticking down in regulation, Ghorbani equalized on a free kick from 30 yards out, finding the top left hand corner of the goal. The two sides played twenty minutes of extra time, but no winner could be decided.
Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, NC) picked up four saves in goal for Lenoir-Rhyne, while Webster made a pair of stops. The Bears held a 14-13 edge in shots, including having all three chances in overtime.
“I was very pleased with our comeback,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “We just keep going until the end. The attitude and mind set is getting better each and every game. It’s a good result again a team having a good season. Going on the road and not losing a conference game is exciting. We are pleased where we are and we hope to keep the momentum going.”
