Volleyball's Sweep of Brevard Provides Hamric With Her 400th Victory
BREVARD, NC -- Catawba provided Coach Ginger Hamric her 400th win, defeating host Brevard in three sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Boshamer Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-19 to improve to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 9-9 and 1-6.
A trio of Lady Indians, Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS), Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) posted double figures in kills. Powers led the way with 13 kills and added six blocks. Lo had 11 kills and eight digs with Griffith picking up 10 kills, nine digs and a pair of aces.
Catawba led the opening set 12-11 and used a five-point run to take control. The run included kills from Powers and Lo and an ace by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS). Brevard closed within 20-17, but the Lady Indians held on to take the set.
Another early run in set two put Catawba up 19-11. Tied at 8-all, Catawba scored six consecutive points, two on kills by Powers. Brevard would slowly cut into the lead and a block by Brook Seaman brought the Tornados to within a point at 24-23. Powers killed off the final point for the set win.
A four-point run in set three gave Catawba a 13-9 edge which the Lady Indians would not relinquish. Brevard never got within three points the rest of the way with Griffith killing off match point.
Jordei Osby and Chelsey Trojan each had eight kills to pace Brevard. Seaman had seven kills and four blocks, while setter Jami Perry had 28 assists and 10 digs. Catawba setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) totaled 35 assists.
