Women's Soccer Takes 1-0 Win Over C-N On Late Strike By Retundie
SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) scored with just under four minutes to play to lift Catawba to a 1-0 victory over visiting Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-3-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 8-4 and 3-1.
The teams had very few opportunities in the opening half, combining for just five shots. C-N had three of the shots, but Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) recording three of her four match saves. The Lady Indians did not have a shot on goal, with Retundie firing wide on both tries.
Catawba would out-shoot the Eagles 6-1 in the final half with Retundie finally breaking through collecting a ball off a rebound and firing past C-N keeper Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, ONT, CANADA) in the 87th minute. MacKenzie joined Webster with four saves.
“I’m exceptionally proud of our team today,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “I thought in the second half we looked very good. I, as a coach, have a lot respect for Coach McNamara and his team. I knew they would bring out the best in us and we rose to the occasion. Our young team is growing in strength and the seniors are playing by example. We feel very good about where we are heading into break.”
