Courson Named SAC Volleyball Specialist of the Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba freshman setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) has been named the South Atlantic Conference volleyball Specialist of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12. The SAC Player of the Week is Carson-Newman senior outside hitter Kelsey Fleck (Celina, OH). Both Fleck and Courson earn SAC honors for the first time in their careers.
Courson guided Catawba to a pair of sweeps last week as the Tribe moved into second place in the SAC standings. A West Iredell High School product, Courson dished out 35 assists in a Friday night victory over Brevard. On Saturday, she had 29 assists and three kills in a triumph over Newberry.
For the week, she totaled 64 assists over six sets for a 10.7 assists per set average. In addition, Courson picked up 12 digs on the week for a 2.0 average. The first-year player added six kills, four blocks and an ace. Courson is averaging 9.8 assists per set since taking over the primary setter position for the Catawba Indians. Catawba is 8-2 overall in those 10 matches. Catawba has won five straight matches entering this week’s play.
A graduate of Celina High School, Kelsey Fleck led the Eagles to a 4-0 week. Carson-Newman picked up key wins over Lincoln Memorial and Lander. In the regional victory over the Lander Bearcats, Fleck posted 16 kills, eight blocks and a .481 hitting percentage. In the 3-0 victory over LMU, she recorded eight kills. Fleck had 12 kills in a non-conference victory over local rival King.
The SAC Volleyball Players of the Week are determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
