Women's Soccer Drops Overtime Decision at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Danielle Tanner scored twice to lift Tusculum to a 2-1 overtime win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday night at Pioneer Field. The win improves the Pioneers to 9-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 10-4-1 and 4-1-1.
After a scoreless first half, Tusculum grabbed the lead just a minute into the second half. Tanner took a through ball from Michelle Meade, and delivered a strike off the bar and into the net. Catawba freshman Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS) would provide the equalizer in the 57th minute, putting away a loose ball in the box off a corner kick.
Both sides had numerous chances to win the match in the final minutes of regulation, as Tusculum finished the first 90 minutes of the match with a 13-12 edge in shots.
The Pioneers outshot the Catawba Indians 4-0 in extra time, notching the 2-1 victory on Tanner's goal in the 99th minute. Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) knocked down a shot from Meade, but Tanner collected the rebound and tapped it into the net.
Vanessa Fyffe made four saves for Tusculum, while Webster stopped six shots for the Lady Indians.
“It’s a heartbreaking loss,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “After we scored to tie things, I thought we were the better team at the end. We battled well and worked hard, but they got the decisive goal.”
