Volleyball Puts Up Tough Fight, But Falls In Five To Wingate
Meeks, Powers deliver 20 kills each in the loss
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate outlasted host Catawba in a hard-fought, five-set match in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym, winning by the scores of 25-20, 15-25, 25-16, 19-25 and 15-10. Wingate remains unbeaten in the league as the Bulldogs improve to 21-1 overall and 10-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 13-8 and 7-4.
Stormi Gale (Richmond, TX) paced Wingate with 16 kills, 14 digs and six blocks. Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, KY) added 15 kills, while setter Liz Willis (Raleign, NC) posted 56 assists and a dozen digs. Catawba was led by Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS), who tallied 20 kills, 14 digs and four blocks, and freshman Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS), who delivered a career-high 20 kills and three blocks. Setter Megan Courson had 53 assists.
Wingate pulled away from a 7-all tie in the opening set. A Kathryn Reddick (Franklinton, NC) kill sparked a 5-1 Bulldog run and a 12-8 lead. Catawba got as close as two points at 15-13, but a kill from Gale and two combo blocks helped Wingate push its edge to 18-13. Wingate stretched its lead to six at 24-18 and earned set point on a Lady Indian service error.
Catawba pulled even with a win in set two. Leading 12-11, Powers had three kills and a block assist as the Lady Indians grabbed a 16-11 lead. A kill and block by Courson helped extend the advantage to 19-13. Bloemer pulled Wingate within 20-15, but Meeks had three kills in the final run for Catawba.
Wingate jumped to a 7-1 lead in set three and never looked back. Willis had a kill and ace with Heather Myklebust (Sugarland, TX) adding two kills in the early spurt. Catawba never came closer than five points in the set as the Bulldogs would hit 48% for the set.
The Lady Indians pulled away late to take set four. Wingate led early at 6-3 after an ace by Gale, but Catawba came back, tying things up at 11-all on a kill by Meeks. An ace by Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) and another kill by Meeks gave Catawba a 13-11 edge. A kill by Myklebust and an ace by Brittany Horner (Durham, NC) tied things up at 15-all then Catawba ran off five straight points. Powers had three kills in the decisive run and had a solo block to end the set.
Two kills by Lauren Billo (Orland Park, IL) and another by Gale helped Wingate to an early 4-1 lead in the deciding set. Catawba would pull within a point on three occasions, the last at 9-8 following a kill by Meeks, but Gale had a kill and a block assist as Wingate scored four straight points for a 13-8 edge. Bloemer would kill off match point.
