Men's Swimming Earns Academic Honor, Karlsson and Capano Take Wins at Pentathlon Exhibition
SALISBURY, NC – The Catawba swim teams opened its 2008-09 season with a pair of scrimmages over the weekend. On Friday, the teams competed in a pentathlon, swimming a 100 of each stroke then a 100 IM. Freshman Mikael Karlsson (Norsborg, SWEDEN) claimed the win for the men, swimming a time of 4:28.19 and winning three of the events. He edged freshman Christopher Stolt (Stockholm, SWEDEN) by seven tenths of a second. Patrik Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN) was third in 4:34.72. The women were led by senior Kira Capano (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) with a time of 5:33.74. She won three events to beat out sophomores Meredith Shultz (Richmond, VA), who had a time of 5:38.29, and Katie Huff (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS).
On Saturday the Blue men topped the White 94-80 and the Blue women claimed a 69-65 win. Shultz won three events (200 fly, 200 breast, 500 free). For the women, Capano claimed two wins (200 free, 200 back) along with freshman Kat Kearney (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS), who won the 50 and 100 free. On the men’s side, Drakes claimed wins in the 200 breast, 200 IM and 200 back. Alex Walpole (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) took wins in the 200 and 500 free.
Drakes was recently named as an honorable mention to the CSCAA Spring All-Academic Team with a 3.50 GPA, while majoring in business. The men, as a team, earned academic honors with a 3.03 GPA. The Indians were one of only dozen schools to earn the honor.
