Retundie, Suarez Score Twice As Women's Soccer Blanks Coker 7-0
HARTSVILLE, SC -- Catawba scored five first half goals and went on to top host Coker 7-0 in women's soccer action on Thursday night at the Coker Soccer Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 11-4-1, while the Lady Cobras fall to 3-13, suffering its fifth straight shutout.
Paige Harrington (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle HS) got things started with a goal in the seventh minute. The Lady Indians would score for times between the 19th and 22nd minutes to put the game away. Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) scored two of the goals, while Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS) and Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS).
In the second half, Catawba added two more goals. Freshman Kaitlyn McFarland (Indian Harbour Beach, FL/Satellite HS) scored off a cross from Erinn Westcoat (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami HS) and Suarez added a second goal.
Coker keeper Chelsea Beetch (Palmer, AK) made 13 saves in a losing effort. The Lady Indians held a 27-2 edge in shots with Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) picking up one save in recording the shutout.
“I was very pleased with the way we moved the ball tonight,” said Coach John Cullen. “We showed good calmness and composure on the ball and looked dangerous going forward. Overall, I thought our attention to the game was first class and approached it in the right way.”
