Football Falls At #20 Wingate 34-24
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate rallied from an early first quarter deficit and defeated visiting Catawba 34-24 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Belk Stadium and Martin Field. With the win, the 20th-ranked Bulldogs improve to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-4 and 2-3.
JD Moore (Mount Holly, NC) threw three touchdown passes, completing 13-of-30 passes for 189 yards. His favorite target was Ryan Webber (Concord, NC), who caught four passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Both Webber touchdowns came in the first half. Webber’s second scoring catch pulled the Bulldogs within 14-13 with 3:55 remaining in the second frame.
After the score, Wingate took the lead for good on the ensuing kick-off as Philip Thomas (St. Pauls, NC) returned a Catawba fumble 10 yards for a touchdown. Thomas caught a two-point conversion pass from Moore to give Wingate a 21-14 advantage at intermission.
Moore threw his final scoring strike of the game with 4:30 left in the third quarter, covering 43 yards to Shawn Barrett. The point after was blocked and Catawba’s Chris Noel (High Point, NC/Andrews HS) returned it for a defensive point-after to leave the Bulldogs on top 27-16. Nelson Woods (Charlotte, NC) iced the game with a two-yard on the second play of the final quarter.
Catawba would get a late score on a 31-yard pass from Daniel Griffith (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA) with just over a minute remaining. Wingate would recover the on-side kick and run out the clock.
Catawba had built a 14-7 first quarter lead on two scoring runs by Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS). The senior had a streak of four straight 100-yard games snapped, finishing with 57 yards on 15 carries. He ran for 45 yards on the Tribe’s first possession.
