Powers Leads Volleyball To A Pair Of Wins At Augusta
AUGUSTA, GA – Catawba picked a pair of wins in volleyball action on Saturday afternoon, sweeping USC-Aiken and holding off host Augusta State in matches at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Catawba Indians improve to 15-8 on the season. USC-Aiken dropped to 12-5, while Augusta State is now 11-18.
In its first match, Catawba dispatched the Pacers 25-14, 25-12 and 25-16. The Lady Indians were led by Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS), who had 13 kills. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) had 12 digs and eight kills, while Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) recorded 11 digs and six kills.
Catawba jumped out quickly on Augusta State, winning the first two sets 25-15 ad 25-19. The Jaguars regrouped, taking the next two sets by identical 25-21 scores, before Catawba was able to claim the match with a 15-11 win in set five.
Powers had another outstanding match with 22 kills, seven blocks and eight digs. Freshman Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) posted 14 kills with Griffith and Lo adding 12 and 10 kills, respectively. The duo each had a double-double as Griffith added 21 digs and Lo 14. Setter Megan Courson (Stateville, NC/W. Iredell HS) delivered 53 assists in the five-set win after collecting 34 in the sweep of USC-Aiken.
