Volleyball Knocked Off By Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne upset visiting Catawba, claiming a three-set sweep in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Shuford Gym. The Bears won by the scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19 to improve to 11-16 overall and 3-8 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 15-9 and 7-5.
The Bears put up a dozen blocks as a team, led by Katie Novecek (seven assists), Kassi Henry (six assists) and Chelsea Hill (five assists) to key the win. Catawba hit at a minus-eight percent clip, recording just 28 kills with 29 errors. Hill added nine kills for the Bears with Lindsey Cantu picking up eight. Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) led Catawba with nine kills, while Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) and Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) each added seven.
The Bears pulled away late to take the opening set. Meeks drew Catawba within 20-17 on a kill, but Novacek responded with a kill for L-R, who scored four straight points for a 24-17 edge. A ball handling error on Catawba provided the final point.
A four-point run in set two gave Lenoir-Rhyne a lead it would never loose. The Bears led by as many as seven points in the set, but again saw Catawba get to 20-17, this time on a kill by Lo. The Bears scored the next three points to secure the set, two coming from Caroline Albertelli on a kill and block.
Lenoir-Rhyne never trailed in set three, breaking away from a 6-all tie with a 10-4 run. The Lady Indians twice pulled within a point, the last at 17-16, but kills from Brooke Christenberry and Hill sparked a four-point run and a 21-16 edge.
