Meeks Picks Up A Dozen Blocks As Volleyball Sweeps Newberry
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba got nine kills and a dozen blocks from freshman Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) in a three-set sweep of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-9 overall and 8-5 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-18. Newberry falls to 16-9 and 8-5.
Meeks led a strong defensive effort that held Newberry to just 4.8% hitting. As a team, Catawba recorded 13 blocks with Meeks totaling three solo and nine assists. Freshman Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) added five block assists. Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) was the only Lady Indian to reach double figures in kills with 10. Setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) had 34 assists, three blocks and seven digs.
Newberry held an early lead in the opening set at 7-4 after a kill by Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL), but Catawba used a six-point run behind the serving of Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) to take the lead for good. Meeks had a kill and three block assists in the run. Catawba put the set away with a 7-2 run after Newberry cut the margin to 14-12. Courson served an ace for the set point.
A kill and combo block from Courson gave Catawba a 7-6 lead in set two it would never relinquish. Meeks had a kill and two blocks as the Lady Indians moved out to a 13-7 edge which would increase to 20-11. Meeks and Doss combined on a block to end the set.
Catawba led set three 9-7 when a kill and an ace by Powers started a run that gave the Lady Indians an 18-11 advantage. Newberry pulled within 20-15, but Catawba scored three straight points. Meeks finished off the set with two blocks.
Sales led Newberry with 10 kills and added eight digs. Kara Harris (Grandview, TX) had eight kills with 10 digs. Setter Brianna Blakely (Houston, TX) delivered 28 assists and 11 digs, while Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) also posted 11 digs.
