Softball shutout twice at Newberry

NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba College was shutout by the score of 7-0 in both games of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Newberry Softball Complex. The lossed drop Catawba to 12-24-1 overall and 0-4 in the SAC, while Newberry improves to 24-15 and 4-0. The opening game was halted on Tuesday in the third inning with Newberry holding a 2-0 lead. Newberry would pick up the game with two runners on would quickly add to its lead on a two-run double by Kelly Gault (Clinton, SC). That was plenty of support for pitcher Amy Burnsworth (Jonesboro, GA), who scattered eight hits with no walks and five strike outs to earn the win. Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) paced the Catawba attack with a pair of hits apiece. Katie Satcher had three hits for Newberry, while Lisa Graham (Summerville, SC) had two hits and three RBI. After scoring a single run in the opening inning of the second game, Newberry to control in the third. Newberry scored on an error and two-run homer by Gault to grab a 4-0 edge. A RBI triple by Satcher and back-to-back run-scoring singles by Graham and Gault in the fifth put the game out of reach. Ashley Rhoad (Summerville, SC) allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters in the nightcap. At the plate Satcher had two hits and scored three runs, while Gault drove home three runs with a pair of hits. Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) and Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) had the lone Catawba hits. #######
