Harrington Nets Hat Trick As Women's Soccer Blanks Brevard

BREVARD, NC – Senior Paige Harrington (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle HS) scored three goals as Catawba closed out the regular season with a 5-0 win over host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Brevard Soccer Field.  The Catawba Indians improve to 13-4-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the SAC, while the Tornados end their season at 6-12-1 and 0-8.

Catawba got on the board in the 22nd minute when freshman Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) collected a ball in the box after it had ricocheted off a Brevard defender and lofted a shot just over the reach of Tornado keeper Jordan Box to give the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead.  That would be the lone goal of the opening half.

Catawba struck quickly in the second half scoring twice in the opening three minutes.  The first one came from freshman Lena Suarez (Charlotte, NC/Hopewell HS), who scored on a header off a tip from Nikki Blackwelder (Asheville, NC/Asheville HS).  The second one came 30 seconds later as Harrington took an advance from Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD/Beall HS).

Harrington got back on the board in the 60th minute when she put a ball into the lower left corner of the net.  She finished up the hat trick in the 78th minute.  For the game, the Tornados were outshot 27-10, with Box recording seven saves.

“I was very pleased with our performance,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen.  “We knew it would be an emotional day from Brevard on senior day, but our players handled it well.  In the second half we showed some real quality to put the game away.  It was a great way to end the regular season.”
