Harrington Scores Lone Goal As Women's Soccer Advances To SAC Semifinals
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba senior Paige Harrington (Albemarle, NC/Albemarle HS) scored the lone goal in the 73rd minute as second-seeded Catawba defeated Newberry 1-0 in a first round match of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament on Tuesday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 14-4-1 and advance to face Wingate in a semifinal matchup on Friday afternoon in Rock Hill, SC. Newberry ends its season at 8-9-1.
The teams combined for just five shots in the opening half with Catawba leading the way with four and having the only attempt on goal. Newberry held a 6-3 edge in the second half, but it was Harrington and the Lady Indians that found the back of the net.
Harrington scored off a ball that was deflected by a header. It was the only shot on goal for Catawba in the half. Newberry put two of its shots in the final half on goal, but both were saved by Lady Indian keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS), who posted her sixth shutout of the season. Emily Rhoades (Buckley, WA) had one save for Newberry. Catawba also won the regular season meeting 1-0 in Salisbury.
“We had a real battle with them [Newberry] in the regular season and tonight was no different and thankfully we came out on top,” said Catawba Coach John Cullen. “Paige stepped up and scored a vital goal for us and hopefully her scoring steak will continue. We weren’t particularly dangerous going forward, but sometimes you win on your defensive ability and tonight we defended well and took our chance. We are pleased to be moving on.”
