Volleyball Sweeps UNC Pembroke On Senior Night
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a hard-fought sweep of visiting UNC Pembroke in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 18-9 overall with the 25-23, 25-23, 25-15 win. The Braves fall to 12-17.
Senior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS), playing her final home match, led Catawba with 16 kills, while fellow senior Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) added 12 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Allie Schneider (Cincinnati, OH) posted 13 kills to lead UNCP, while adding seven digs and three aces.
The Braves led for most of the first set until Catawba rallied late. Kills by Andrea Laza (Cary, NC) and Rachel Young (Leesburg, VA) along with a pair of Catawba hitting errors led to a 19-14 UNCP edge. Freshman Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) had a pair of kills and a block to help Catawba tie the set at 20-all and Powers put the Lady Indians up 21-20 with a kill. The teams traded points from there until an ace from Powers gave Catawba the set.
Each team enjoyed early mini-runs in set two. Schneider had a kill and a pair of aces to help Pembroke pull out to a 19-17 lead. The set would be tied five times down the stretch with Laza fighting off a set point with a kill for UNCP. An attack error gave Catawba a second set point which was ended on a kill by Griffith.
Catawba broke away from a 9-8 lead in the final set. Powers had three kills, Griffith two and Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS) two in a run that pushed the Lady Indian advantage to 17-10. Powers would finish the match on consecutive kills.
Two other seniors were also playing their final home games for Catawba. Kalin Collier (Rural Hall, NC/N. Forsyth HS) had two kills and a dig, while Tiffany Andrassy (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson HS) had one dig. Freshman setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) had 46 assists and 10 digs. For UNCP, setter Whitney Hanlin (Manassas, VA) had 30 assists and six digs, while Laza posted nine kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks.
