Volleyball Sweeps Past Mars Hill To Close Regular Season
MARS HILL, NC – Catawba capped its regular season with a three-set sweep of host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-19 to improve to 20-9 overall and 11-5 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 8-18 and 1-15.
Senior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs, while adding four aces to lead Catawba. Senior Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS) had 15 kills, while freshman Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) registered nine blocks, eight of which were solo.
A 9-4 run in the opening set gave Mars Hill a 17-16 lead, but Griffith killed off three of the next four points to spark an 8-1 run for Catawba. Meeks would finish off the set with a solo block. Catawba stormed to a 13-4 lead in the second set and rolled to the 2-0 lead.
Mars Hill had control of the third set, leading 18-13, but a service error gave Catawba a side out and Powers served up 10 straight points. Two kills kills by Griffith was followed by three solo blocks from Meeks to give Catawba a 19-18 lead. Powers would serve two straight aces with Griffith sandwiching two kills around a third Powers ace to cap the run. A Griffith kill ended the match.
Evie Tafunai led Mars Hill with eight kills and added nine digs. Catawba hit nearly 40% for the match, making just six hitting errors on 96 attempts with 44 kills.
