Cuthbertson Runs For Career-High 223 Yards As Football Romps Over LR
Senior sets school rushing marks in final game
HICKORY, NC -- Senior Jamelle Cuthbertson (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) established three school records as Catawba rolled up 601 yards of total offense en route to a 58-23 victory over host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday night at Moretz Stadium. With the win, the Catawba Indians conclude their season at 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, securing a 14th-straight winning campaign. The Bears end their season at 3-8 and 1-6.
Cuthbertson ran for a career-high 223 yards on 21 carries and scored twice. He set the Catawba record for yards in a season (1,141), set a standard with his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season and become the first Tribe back to run for 200 yards in a game twice in a career. The first time also came on the turf at Moretz Field against Lenoir-Rhyne, totaling 218 yards in 2006.
After a 16-yard Cuthbertson run to open the game, Catawba fumbled the snap on its second play from scrimmage to set Lenoir-Rhyne up at the Tribe 37. Senior Chris Noel (High Point, NC/Andews HS) help the Indians avert an early deficit as he intercepted Justin Sanders on the Bears’ first play.
Cuthbertson helped key a 97-yard drive, rushing for 50 yards, following the pick to give the Indians a 6-0 edge. Antonio Hall (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford HS) finished the drive with a nine-yard run. Lenoir-Rhyne followed with a 70-yard march in 12 plays to take its lone lead of the game following a four-yard run by Sanders.
A 31-yard burst for Cuthbertson was followed by a 20-yard run from Brian Terwilliger (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) to set up a three-yard score from Cuthbertson to give Catawba a 13-7 edge at the end of the quarter. He finished the opening quarter with 100 yards.
Catawba went up 21-7 early in the second quarter as Grayson Downs (Mt. Pleasant, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) caught a 32-yard pass from Patrick Dennis (Durham, NC/Cedar Ridge HS). It was the first of four touchdown strikes for Dennis, who threw for 239 yards on 13-of-20 passing. Downs caught a two-point conversion pass from Terwilliger.
Each team scored twice in the final six minutes of the half. Andrew Courman ran in from five-yards out to cut the Indian lead to 21-14, but Catawba answered on an eight-yard pass from Dennis to Gerron Bryant (W. Palm Beach, FL/Boynton Beach HS). Two plays later, Byron Darby raced 53 yards to get the Bears within 28-20. Catawba was able to tack on a 31-yard field goal by Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) to cap the first half scoring, giving the Indians a 31-20 lead.
The Bears opened the second half with a 22-yard field goal from Colin Corpe, but Catawba quickly answered. Cuthbertson, who had 154 yards at the half and needing just eight yards for the school single-season rushing mark, wasted little time breaking off a 33-run on his first touch of the second half. Dennis followed with a 20-yard strike to Brandon Bunn (Virginia Beach, VA/Fork Union) and a 38-23 Catawba lead.
Lenoir-Rhyne fumbled on its next drive and Dennis connected with senior Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC/W. Charlotte HS) on a 34-yard pass to put Catawba up 45-23. Terwilliger iced the game on a four-yard run early in the fourth quarter and Cuthbertson capped his career with a one-yard run with 7:08 to play for the final margin.
Hall followed Cuthbertson with 75 yards on eight carries as Catawba ran for 362 yards. Bunn caught three passes for 68 yards, while Strong had two receptions for 66 yards. Darby finished with an even 100 yards on nine carries for L-R. The Bears ran for 292 yards, but threw for just 37.
