Baseball salvages final game of PC series

CLINTON, SC -- Catawba College salvaged the final game of its weekend series with Presbyterian, topping the Blue Hose 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. Catawba improves to 20-15 overall and 6-5 in the SAC, a game and a half back of first place. Presbyterian falls to 15-21 and 6-6. Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) scattered six hits over six innings, allowing two runs with no walks and three strike outs to earn the win, while freshman Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) tossed three innings of hitless relief to earn his first save. Catawba broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC). Presbyterian would gain the advantage in its half of the sixth on a two-out, two-run homer by Matt Warren (Lexington, SC). The Indians came right back in the seventh, scoring three times. With one out, Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) walked and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) followed with a single. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) followed with a single to tie the game at 2-2. After a flyout, Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Josh Jordan (Gastonia, NC) singled, allowing two runs to score. Smith entered in the seventh and allowed only one baserunner over three innings, a two out hit batter in the seventh. Motsinger, Hill and Jordan each collected three hits for the Tribe. #######
