Swim Teams Open Season Against Pair Of NCAA I Squads


GREENVILLE, NC -- The Catawba swim teams opened their seasons against a pair of NCAA I squads on Saturday against East Carolina and the College of Charleston.  The women fell 140-75 to the host Pirates and lost 177-58 to CofC.  Catawba’s men lost 161-60 to ECU and 150-54 to the Cougars.

Sophomore Katie Huff (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) grabbed a win in the 100 breast, swimming a time of 1:09.61.  Senior Kira Capano (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) was third in the 500 free (5:35.83)junior Brittany Harrigan (Ruscom, Ont, CANADA/Essex District HS) picked up a fourth place finish in the 100 back (1:07.73).  Junior Melanie Porter (Geddes, SD/Vermillion HS) had a lifetime best in the 1000 free (12:36.34) and freshman Crystal Ignatowski (Durham, NC/Riverside HS) swam a lifetime best in the 50 free (32.77).

On the men’s side, freshman Christopher Stolt (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Fryshusest) had a school record for the 50 fly at 24.43 as he finished third in the 100 fly (53.52).  Sophomore Alex Walpole (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS) was fourth in the 200 free (1:47.56) and fifth in the 500 free (4:53.52).  Sophomore Patrick Novak (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was second in the 100 breast (1:03.44).  Stolt, Walpole, Grant Gibson (Owen Sound, Ont, CANADA/West Hill HS) and freshman Mikael Karlsson (Norsborg, SWEDEN/Tullinge Gymnasium) made up the 400 free relay team that placed second in a time of 3:18.47.
