Powers Claims Top Two Volleyball Awards From South Atlantic Conference
Senior named SAC Scholar Athlete and Player of the Year
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba senior Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS) earned the top two South Atlantic Conference post-season individual awards for volleyball which was announced by the league office on Thursday. Powers, who helped lead the Indians to a second-place finish in the SAC standings, was named both the league's Player of the Year and the Scholar Athlete. She was joined on the all-conference first team by Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS), while Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) earned a spot on the SAC All-Freshman team.
Powers, a middle blocker, leads Catawba and the league by averaging 4.3 kills per set. She also leads Catawba in both blocks and aces per set, ranking second and third in the SAC, respectively.
Griffith, a senior outside hitter, has posted the second most kills for Catawba at 3.0 per set, while also recording the second most digs per set at 3.2. She stands seventh in the SAC in kills and 10th in digs. Meeks, a middle blocker, is averaging 2.1 kills and 0.7 blocks per set.
Wingate University coach Shelton Collier, who guided the Bulldogs to an undefeated conference record and the conference championship for the second consecutive year, was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Wingate's Liz Willis, who finished second in the league in assists, was named the Freshman of the Year.
Powers is an elementary education major with a 3.591 GPA. She has been a four-year starter for Catawba and a three-time All-SAC selection. She was an honorable mention AVCA All-South selection in 2007 and was twice named national Player of the Week during her career. She holds the Catawba record for kills in a game, season and career.
In the classroom, Powers has been named to the Dean's List five times, the President's List twice and is a member of Kappa Delta Phi education honor society. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team in 2007.
Powers is also active on campus and in the community. She is president of the Catawba Student-Athlete Advisory Council. She also volunteers with Rowan County Arc, helping to plan activities for developmentally disabled adults and volunteers with Special Olympics. She is a Bible School Teacher at her church and is a volunteer head coach of a Junior Olympic volleyball team.
