Lacrosse suffers another one-goal lossSALISBURY, NC -- St. Andrews got a goal from Stephen Belderes (Orlando, FL) with just 1:01 remaining to give the Knights a 7-6 win over host Catawba in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday night. St. Andrews never trailed, although Catawba fought back to tie the game on three occasions in the last half. St. Andrews improves to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the DSC. Catawba, which dropped its third game by a single goal, falls to 4-5 and 1-4. Belderes scored the first of his two goals in the opening two minutes and the Knights added a second goal in the opening minute of the second quarter for a 2-0 lead. Catawba's lone first half tally was by Josh Maphis (Ocean City, MD) at the 10:24 mark of the second quarter. St. Andrews led 2-1 at the break and added a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of the second half to go on top 4-1. Catawba would rally at the end of the third quarter, scoring three goals in the final five minutes of the frame. Senior Mike Delabar (St. Louis, MO) tied the game with just 51 seconds in the quarter. Andre Kovacs (Orange Park, FL) put the Knights on top at the 12:54 mark of the fourth quarter, but David Dunnuck (Greensboro, NC), brought Catawba back even at the 8:38 mark. Mike McCarthy's (Ellicott City, MD) second goal of the game gave St. Andrews a 6-5 edge with 4:59 remaining, but Dunnuck tied the score just 25 seconds later. Belderes got the game-winner after an initial save by Catawba goalie Frank Fish (Damascus, MD), who had 24 saves in the game. The rebounded shot was collected by Pat Haley (Baltimore, MD), who fed Belderes.
