Muldrow And Higgins Pace Women's Basketball Past Converse
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Catawba stormed away from Converse in the second half to record an 81-58 victory in women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Pioneers Classic at Pioneer Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0, while the Valkyries fall to 0-2.
Senior Brittany Higgins (Tacoma Park, MD/Blair HS) scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the opening half, but Catawba led only 36-34 despite 20 turnovers by Converse. The Valkyries held several leads in the opening half before falling down by 10 with five minutes left before the half. Converse would rally back to within a bucket at the break.
Leading 40-39 in the opening moments of the second half, Catawba used an 11-0 run to take control. The Lady Indians kept a double-digit margin the rest of the way. Pamela Muldrow (Jacksonville, NC/Southwest HS) had a dozen of her 20 points after the break for Catawba.
After shooting just 38% in the opening half, Catawba canned 47% in the final 20 minutes and held Converse to just 32% in the last half. Converse had 20 more turnovers in the second half to finish the game with 40 miscues to just 14 for Catawba. The Lady Indians scored 41 points off the turnovers.
Converse held a 53-34 edge on the boards with Ashley Day grabbing 11 rebounds. Kendra Bothof led the way in scoring with 14 points. Ashley Arff added 11 points and Jasmine Collier 10. Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) also reached double figures for Catawba with 10 points. Muldrow added seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
