Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener In Overtime
SALISBURY, NC -- A jumper by Barton’s Jannetta Robinson (Willard, NC) with 3.2 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime where the Bulldogs out-lasted host Catawba to post a 90-87 win in women’s basketball action on Thursday night at Goodman Gym. Barton, the preseason Conference Carolinas favorite, evens its record at 1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-1.
Barton never trailed in the extra period, taking the lead for good on a layup by Anita Fenner (Mew Bern, NC) with 3:07 remaining. Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blair HS) pulled the Lady Indians within 85-84 with 1:07 left, but Esty Flores (Virginia Beach, VA) hit two free throws and Fenner added another after a missed three-pointer for an 88-84 lead with 23 seconds to play. Cameron Clark’s (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) three-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 88-87, but Flores iced the game with a pair of free throws with 0.6 on the clock.
Flores scored 35 points to lead Barton and added seven steals. She scored 21 of her points in the first half, including a three-pointer in the final seconds to give the Bulldogs a 44-41 edge at the break. Catawba led by nine early the second half of the game that saw nine ties and 13 lead changes. Down 63-56 with 9:49 left, the Bulldogs used a 10-3 run to tie things up with 6:26 remaining.
