Women's Soccer receives 11 commitments for 2002Catawba College women's soccer coach, John Cullen, has announced eleven commitments for his initial recruiting class for the 2002 season. The newcomers are from Julie Austin, of Willow Springs, NC, Catherine Balentine, of Charlotte, NC, Robin Berkey, of West Boylston. MA, Maran Bock, of Avondale, AZ, Lisa DeMeyer, of Jamestown, NC, Charlise Downing, of Bloomington, IL, Jessica Hull, of Westville, NJ, Lindsay Layman, of Hagerstown, MD, Stephanie Morey, of Ephrata, PA, Kyley Thompson, of Hagerstown, MD, and Mallory Tsetsilas, of Hagerstown, MD. Austin, a 5-4, midfielder, was a two-time all-conference performer at Fuquay-Varina High School. She was named the school's Female Athlete of the Year in 2001. Austin helped her team to the state tournament finals in 1999. Balentine, a 5-8, goalkeeper, was a two-year team captain at Myers Park High School. She was team MVP as a junior and an all-conference performer. She helped Charlotte Soccer Club to consecutive state titles. Berkey, a 5-4, midfielder, was a four-year starter at West Boylston High School. She was a league all-star and a team captain. She helped the West Boylston to four district tournaments, including the finals in 1999. Berkey played in the Massachusetts State Games and in Holland in the Coca-Cola Haarlem Cup. Bock, a 5-2, defender/midfielder, was a four-year starter at Westview High School. She was captain for three years and was a three-time all-region selection. She helped the Knights to a regional championship as a senior. DeMeyer, is a 5-11, defender, from Southwest Guilford High School. She was a all-conference and all-region performer for the 3A State Champions. Also helped the Cowgirls to a conference title. Downing, a 5-7, midfielder, is a senior transfer from Lenoir-Rhyne College, where she earned first team All-South Atlantic Conference honors and was a three-year starter. At Normal xxx High School, she was a two-time all-conference and all-sectional performer. Hull, a 5-2, defender, was a four-year starter at Deptford Township High School. As a senior she was named first team all-conference. Hill was a member of the Gloucester County Select Team and played for the Deptford Club Team. Layman, a 5-5, defender, was a four-year starter at Smithburg High School. She was a four-time all-conference and three-time all-county selection. As a senior, she helped the Leopards to a 19-0-1 record and a Co-State Championship. Morey, a 5-5, midfielder, was a four-year starter at Ephrata High School. She was a two-time all- star selection and helped the Mounts to a pair of state semifinal appearances. Over the last three years, Ephrata compiled a 55-15-6 record. Thompson, a 5-1, forward, was a four-year starter at Smithburg High School, scoring 66 goals and adding 39 assists in her carere. She was a three-year captain and four-time all-league selection. She was also a four-time all-county performer and earned All-State honors as a senior, helping the Leopards to a Co-State Championship. Tsetsilas, a 5-4, forward, was a four-year starter at South Hagerstown High School. She set school records for goals in a season and a career. Played club soccer for Frederick United in the WAGS Division I League. #######
