Women's Basketball Races Past Pfeiffer 95-81
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blair HS) scored 25 points to lead five double-figure scores to help lead Catawba to a 95-81 win over host Pfeiffer in women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Merner Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-1, while the Falcons fall to 0-3.
The Lady Indians opened strong, racing to a 25-9 lead just over six minutes into the game. Pfeiffer battled back and took a 30-28 lead on a jumper by Devona Knight at the 7:26 mark of the opening half. The last Falcon lead came with one minute to go before the break on a layup by Shanee’ Purnell, but a three-pointer by Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) with 37 seconds left in the half gave Catawba the lead for good.
Catawba would hold a 43-41 edge at the half, scoring 24 points off 20 Falcon turnovers. Knight briefly tied the contest on Pfeiffer’s first possession of the second stanza, but Catawba began to pull away in the opening five minutes. Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) put the lead to 57-49 at the 15:21 mark and Maggie Sullivan (Fort Mill, SC/Charlotte Christian) upped the margin to 61-51 with 14:08 left.
Up 61-54, Catawba put the game away with a 16-0 run for a 77-54 edge with ten minutes remaining. Pfeiffer cut the margin to a dozen points at 88-76 with 2:50 to go, but the Lady Indians got layups from Higgins and Sullivan over the next minute and half to keep its double-digit advantage.
