Volleyball Edged Out In Regional Final By AASU

07_volleyball_007

WINGATE, NC -- Armstrong Atlantic edged out Catawba in three tightly contested sets in the championship match of the 2008 NCAA II Southeast Region Volleyball Tournament.  The third-seeded Pirates, now 28-6, won by the scores of  25-23, 29-27 and 25-23 to advance to the NCAA II Finals.  The Catawba Indians, seeded third, end their season at 22-11 after advancing to the their first regional final.

Senior Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette HS), who was one of three Lady Indians named to the regional all-tournament team, led the way for the third straight match.  She collected 15 kills and added eight digs.  She was joined on the all-tournament team by junior libero Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC/Foard HS), who tallied 19 digs, and freshman setter Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS), who posted 30 assists and 10 digs.

Armstrong Atlantic got double-digit kills from four players, including double-doubles from Torrie Bevolo and Rindy Vidovich.  Bevolo had team-highs with 13 kills and 20 digs, while Vidovich added a dozen kills, 12 digs and five blocks.

The first set was close throughout with AASU taking three-point leads at 14-11 and 15-12.  Catawba was able to tie the set at 15-all, but the Pirates again pulled out by three at 19-16.  The Lady Indians clawed back and tied it at 21-all following an ace by Lo then went on top 22-21 on a kill by Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC/N. Moore HS).

Catawba had a chance for a set point after a combo block by Powers and Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS), but an attack error pulled AASU even at 23-all.  Michele Remlinger and Gwendolyn Clarke combined on blocks on the next two points to give the Pirates the opening set.

The Lady Indians took an early lead in set two.  Catawba led 11-7 and appeared to be poised to go up by five, but a block was dug up by a foot of an AASU player and the Pirates played it over for an uncontested point.  AASU then rallied back to even things at 11-all.

Catawba stayed in front, taking a 22-18 lead following a block by Powers and Erin O’Reilly (Morehead City, NC/W. Carteret HS).  The Pirates closed within 22-21 after a kill by Remlinger and an ace by Vidovich, but a kill by Meeks put Catawba up 23-21.  A kill by Clarke and two aces by Casey Howlett pushed the Pirates up 24-23.  Catawba withstood five set points before consecutive kills by Vidovich gave AASU a two-set edge.

The Pirates grabbed an early 10-6 lead in the final set, but could not shake Catawba.  The Lady Indians would stay within two most of the way until AASU got a kill by Remlinger for a 20-16 edge.  Catawba would use a 5-1 run to tie things up after two kills each from Griffith and Powers and an ace by Tiffany Andrassy (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson HS).

AASU was able to stay on top, getting a kill from Remlinger and an ace from Howlett for a 23-21 lead.  Remilinger followed a service error with a kill for a 24-22 lead.  Griffith staved off the first match point with a kill, but Bevolo followed with a kill to give the Pirates the win.
