Fields and Houston Lead Men's Basketball Past Bowie State
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba picked up an 87-70 win over Bowie State in men’s basketball action at the OrthoCarolina Classic on Saturday afternoon at Wingate’s Cuddy Arena. The Catawba Indians, ranked 23rd in the NABC poll, improve to 5-0, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-2.
Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) tallied 20 points, while Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) scored 16 of his 19 in the opening half to pace the Indians. Bowie State was led by Armond Hill with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Curtis Massey, Andrew Engel and Corey Camphor scored 12 points each in the setback, while Massey earned a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds.
Bowie State had an early 12-6 edge, keyed by three-pointers from Engle and Camphor. Houston was able to the game at 12-all as he hit a trio of three-pointers and three free throws in the opening four minutes. A three-pointer by Fields at the 12:47 mark of the opening half gave Catawba the lead for good at 21-18 and the Indians completed a 15-4 run with consecutive three-pointer by Trey Shoemaker (Charlotte, NC/Country Day) and a tip-in by Isaac Rose (Jonesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) to lead 33-22.
A three-pointer by Engle closed the Bulldogs’ deficit to seven late in the first half, but Houston scored in the final seconds for a 51-42 lead at the break. He opened the second half with a three-pointer for a double-digit margin Catawba would not relinquish.
After tailing by as many as 19, Bowie State cut the margin to 79-68 on a layup by Camphor with 3:32 to go. A jumper by Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC, Freedom HS) and four free throws by Fields pushed the lead to 85-68 with just over a minute to play.
Cliff Burns (Cooleemee, NC?Davie Co. HS), with 13 points, and Rutherford, who added 10, also scored in double figures for Catawba. Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) handed out seven assists.
