Swimmers Break Three Marks In Opening Night At SCAD Invite
SAVANNAH, GA – Catawba broke three school records and swam to several lifetime bests in the opening day of the SCAD Invite swim meet on Friday night. The Catawba women stand fifth after the first day, while the men are third.
Two records were broke in the men’s 800 free relay. The team of Alex Walpole (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS), Grant Gibson (Owen Sount, Ont, CANADA/West Hill HS), Christopher Stolt (Stockholm, SWEDEN) and Mikael Karlsson (Norsborg, SWEDEN) posted a time of 7:13.44 to shave five seconds off the previous mark, finishing fifth. Karlsson set the 200 free mark with his leadoff leg swim of 1:44.04. Gibson had the top finish of the night for Catawba, touching third in the 1650 free.
Other marks fell in the 1650 free. Walpole had a lifetime best of 16:58.57 in finishing sixth. Zach Owen (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) also posted a career-best swim with a time of 18:14.79. For the women, Kara Morrill (Rockville, MD/Rockville HS) established a new freshman mark in the 1650 free with a time of 19:04.51 and was eighth. Melanie Porter (Geddings, SD/Vermillion HS) had a lifetime best of 21:29.61.
