#14 Men's Basketball Sails Past Voorhees
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba canned eight first-half three-pointers and went on to defeat visiting Voorhees 98-87 in men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The 14th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 8-0 overall, while the Tigers fall to 4-6.
Junior Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) paced Catawba, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the opening half. Juniors Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) and Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) added 19 and 17 points off the bench, respectively. Rutherford pulled down eight rebounds. Sophomore Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) dished out 11 assists and picked up six steals.
All five starters reached double figures for Voorhees. Jerrell Wilburn led the way with a game-high 21 points, while Hubert King added 18. Derrick Williams posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Voorhees led for much of the opening 10 minutes, but a 13-2 run, keyed by a Rutherford three-pointer, put Catawba on top at 33-24 with just over five minutes left in the opening half. A three-point play by Fields pushed the margin to 41-28, but the Tigers used a 6-1 run over the final 1:10 of the half to cut the deficit to 45-40 at the break.
A Wilburn layup with 16:55 remaining kept Voorhees within five early in the second half, but three-pointers by Isaac Rose (Joinesville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) and Reid gave Catawba a double-digit lead. Catawba would increase its lead to as many as 18 points with just under 10 minutes left and kept a double-digit lead until the final seconds.
Donzell Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar HS) also reached double figures for Catawba with 12 points. The Indians had 18 steals off 22 Voorhees turnovers and made 11-of-25 from behind the arc. Catawba will next face NCAA I UNC-Asheville on the road, next Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
