Whitley and Hicks Notch Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball Tops Livingstone
SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) posted her first career double-double to lead host Catawba past Livingstone 69-57 in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. Whitley recorded career highs with 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Catawba Indians improve to 6-4. The Lady Blue Bears fall to 2-6.
Red-shirt freshman Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day), playing in her first game for the Lady Indians, also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists.
Livingstone grabbed an early 9-2 lead in the opening two and half minutes, but Catawba scored eight straight points to take its first lead at 10-9 on a jumper by Pamela Muldrow (Jacksonville, NC/Southwest HS)at the 13:48 mark. The Blue Bears held one last lead as Kalyela Josephs (Jacksonville, NC) answered with a pair of free throws. Two free throws by Hicks put Catawba up for good at 12-11 with 13:02 remaining.
The free throws by Hicks started a 19-2 run that pushed Catawba’s lead to 29-13 with 6:51 to go. Whitley had two of her three-pointers in the run and finished the half with 13 points. Catawba took a 37-23 lead to the break as Livingstone hit on just 29% from the field with the Lady Indians holding a 31-20 edge on the boards.
Catawba would increase its lead in the second half to 26 points before Livingstone closed the game on a 17-3 run over the final six minutes. The Lady Indians finished with a 54-47 edge on the boards and scored 26 points off 25 Blue Bear turnovers.
Montiya Harrison (Petersburg, VA) led Livingstone with 18 points and five steals, while Brittany Wright (Richmond, VA) had 13 points and seven boards. Rashida Elbourne (Newport News, VA) pulled down 10 rebounds for the Blue Bears.
