Baseball blanks St. Andrews behind Hill and Fairweather

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College defeated visiting St. Andrews 9-0 in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) collected three extra-base hits and freshman Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed a one-hitter over his seven innings as the Indians improved to 21-15. St. Andrews fell to 24-16. Hill staked the Indians to an early lead with a two-out, three-run homer in the first. Catawba added another run in the second as Joey Bradley (Cary, NC) led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Isreal Morrow (Claremont, NC). Hill collected the first of two doubles in the third, then led off the sixth with another two-bagger and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bradley. The Indians added another run in the sixth on a squeeze bunt by Josh Jordan (Gastonia, NC). The Tribe tacked on a single run in the seventh off an error and got a two-run single by Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) in the eighth. Fairweather tossed seven innings and set a career-high with seven strikeouts and walked none. The lone hit was a two-out single down the rightfield line in the third by J.D. Vidal (Ormond Beach, FL). Only one baserunner advanced past first base. The one hit lowered his previous best outing of surrendering three hits in six innings in a win over North Greenville. Fairweather (4-1) retired the final 12 men he faced, while Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) and Jake Talley (Royersford, PA) completed the shutout. Talley allowed a leadoff single to Vidal to open the ninth, but he was erased by Morrow trying to reach second. #######
