Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest At Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Five players scored in double figures as Newberry claimed an 88-72 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Gym. Newberry improves to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 11-7 and 3-4.
Laura Marquart led Newberry with 19 points, hitting on five-of-seven from behind the arc, with Monica Alexeander scoreing 15 points. Helen KcKinney posted a double-double iteh 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Janine Ward dished out 10 assists.
Catawba was led by Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blari HS), who tallied 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) followed with 13 points and Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) chipped in with a dozen.
Newberry jumped out quickly and led by double digits four minutes into the contest. Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) cut the deficit to 19-14 on a three-pointer at the 13 minutes mark, but Newberry used a 16-6 run to open a 35-20 edge with just under seven minutes to go before the half and took a 47-36 lead to the break.
Catawba closed within nine on a Higgins basket early in the second half, but Marquart and McKinney connected on three-pointers to push the Newberry margin to 15 and Catawba closed within single digits the rest of the way.
Newberry shot nearly 53% for the game, while Catawba hit on just 34%. Newberry made 9-of-15 from long range with the Lady Indians hitting on just 4-of-21. Newberry also had a 45-34 edge on the boards to offset a –9 deficit in turnovers.
