SALISBURY, NC -- Limestone swept a doubleheader from host Catawba College in softball action on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Saints won by the scores of 3-0 and 5-3 to improve to 12-20. Catawba falls to 12-28-1. Limestone scored all its runs for the first game in the fifth inning. The Saints strung together four consecutive hits with two outs to plate the runs. Becky Kirkman (Chester, VA) scattered four hits to earn the shutout. She walked two, hit one and struck a pair over the seven innings. Powell, Noda and Kathy Matheis (Beaverton, OR) each had two hits for the Saints. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) had a double for Catawba. Powell got the Saints on the board early in the nightcap as she hit a two-run homer in the first inning. That was the only hit for Limestone over the first four innings. Jill Worsham (Chester, VA) kept the Catawba bats silent until Jen Ropp (Broadway, VA) led of the fourth with a single. The Lady Indians failed to take advantage of an additional walk and error in the inning as they stranded a pair of runners. Catawba did take advantage of three Limestone miscues in the fifth to get on the board and take the lead. A hit by Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) was sandwiched by a pair of errors to score the first run, while Ropp singled to tie the score. Another error led to the go-ahead run as Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) scored after an errant throw. Limestone came right back in the sixth as Noda led off with an infield single and went to third on an error on a sacrifice by Nicole Biddinger (Frederick, MD). Kirkman tied the score with a sacrifice fly and Worsham delivered a two-run single with two outs to put the Saints up 5-3. The Saints scored an additional run in the seventh, while Catawba scored twice to cut the deficit to 6-5. The game was called for darkness with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and with the tying run on first for the Lady Indians, reverting the score back to 5-3 after six complete innings. Worsham earned the win on the mound. She scattered three hits and did not allow an earned run. She walked three and struck out four. Ropp had two of the hits for Catawba. #######
