#11 Men's Basketball Drops Second Straight
NEWBERRY, SC -- Newberry pulled away from Catawba in the final five minutes and claimed a 78-68 win in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Gym. Newberry improves to 14-4 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while the 11th-ranked Indians fall to 13-5 and 5-2.
Catawba held a seven-point lead with 12:23 to go following a three-pointer by Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School), but Newberry responded with 9-2 run to even things up on a layup by Brett Goodwell with nine minutes left.
With the game tied at 61-all with four minutes remaining, Newberry went on a 8-0 run, getting four points each from Clemente Martin and Kendrick Johnson, to grab a 69-61 edge with 1:47 left. Newberry then connected on seven-of-eight at the line win the final 1:10 to salt the win away.
Martin scored 26 points, hitting on nine-of-12 from the field and eight-of-nine from the line. Grant Domsic added 17 off the bench, while Goodwell posted a double-double with 15 points and a dozen rebounds.
Catawba was led by Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS). The junior scored 21 points and hit on five three-pointers. Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) tossed in 12 points and Reid scored 10.
For the second straight game and only third time on the season, Catawba failed to shoot 40% from the floor. The Indians shot just 34.4% and a mere 30% in the opening half. Newberry made 47.5% and held a 41-38 edge on the glass.
