Men's Basketball Drops Third Straight With Loss To Wingate
SALISBURY, NC – Tommy Coles (Danville, VA) scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead visiting Wingate to a 92-79 victory over 25th-ranked Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs improve to 9-12 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 13-6 and 5-3.
Wingate pulled out to a six-point lead at the break then shot 53% in the second half to pull away. Catawba never led in the second half, but trimmed a 50-40 deficit to 54-50 on a basket by Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) with 14:56 left.
David Johnson (Durham, NC) answered with a three-pointer and Wingate pushed its edge to 58-56 with 10:03 remaining. Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) pulled the Indians within 79-74 on a pair of free throws with 3:15 to go. Wingate would then scored the next nine points to ice the issue.
DeMario Mattox (Rocky Mount, NC) added 15 points for the Bulldogs, while Johnson came off the bench to add a dozen. Fields had 21 to pace Catawba with Houston adding 20 points and seven rebounds.
Wingate shot 50% for the game and made 9-of-20 from behind the arc. Catawba hit on just 39.7% and a mere 33% in the second half. The Indians were 11-of-29 from 3-point range. Wingate also did well at the line making good on 17-of-18 from the stripe.
