Holmes Helps Shutdown #22 Tusculum As Baseball Take 5-1 Win
KANNAPOLIS, NC – Senior Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) tossed five shutout innings to help Catawba knock of Tusculum 5-1 in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-0, while the 22nd-ranked Pioneers fall to 2-4.
Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) picked up three hits and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) added two hits and two RBI to pace the offense. Holmes allowed just four hits over five innings and got help from six relievers to grab the win.
Catawba opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Ahearn and Query started the frame with consecutive doubles. Following an error and a bunt single by Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS), Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) laced the third double of the inning down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Indians a 4-0 lead.
The Indians would add their final run in the fifth. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Ahearn singled to get things started with Query driving home the run on a ground out.
Tusculum was able to get on the board in the ninth as Payden Houser (Lincolnton, NC) singled home Tim Kellinger (Knoxville, MD) with a two-out single. The Pioneers collected 10 hits, three each by Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, NY), Sean Cotten (Mooresville, NC) and Matt Ford (Jonesborough, TN), but stranded nine runners and hit into a pair of double plays.
Catawba produced 11 hits on offense. Lyerly and Hatley also had a pair of hits in the win.
