Whitley's Career-High Propels Women's Basketball Past Newberry

SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) scored a career-high 22 points to pace Catawba to a 71-54 win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 13-9 overall and 5-6 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 14-9 and 7-5.

Catawba trailed only after the first Newberry basket by Anita Bulcher (Russia, OH), who scored a team-high 22 points for Newberry.  A Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blair HS) jumper at the 17 minute mark of the opening half gave Catawba the lead for good at 3-2.

Higgins scored 10 of her 12 points in the opening half as Catawba grabbed a 30-22 edge.  Newberry shot just 32% in the opening stanza and missed on all eight three-point attempts.

Bulcher cut the Newberry deficit to six at 39-33 with 15:19 to go, but Catawba scored ten straight points, capped by consecutive three-pointers by Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) to go on top 49-33 with 12:58 remaining.  The Lady Indians would not let Newberry closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Whitley canned five of a season-high nine three-pointers for Catawba, which was 9-of-19 behind the arc.  Newberry went just 1-of-14 from long range.  Clark added the other four three-pointers and finished with 14 points.  Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) picked up a dozen points for the Lady Indians.

Bulcher posted a double-double for Newberry, adding 10 rebounds to her 18 points.  She made 9-of-12 field goals.  Monica Alexander (Norcross, GA) tallied 14 points and dished out five assists.
