Men's Basketball Drops 79-73 Decision To Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Brett Goodwell (Inglewood, CA) scored 23 points and Clemente Martin (Freeport, BAHAMAS) added 21 to lead Newberry to a 79-73 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Newberry improves to 17-6 overall and 7-5 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 14-8 and 6-5.
Newberry scored the first seven points and never trailed in the opening half. Catawba did battle back to tied the score at 23-all on a three-pointer by Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) before Newberry took a 29-25 lead at the break.
Catawba shot just 31% in the opening half and Newberry helped force 11 turnovers. Newberry moved out to a 35-28 edge early in the second half before a 12-4 run by Catawba, capped by a three-pointer by Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS), gave the Indians a 40-39 edge with 14:42 remaining.
Newberry trailed by four at 55-51 with 8:38 left then scored eight straight points and never trailed again. Catawba tied the score at 59-all, but an 8-0 run by Newberry proved to be the difference as the visitors went up 67-59 with 3:18 remaining.
Newberry shot 50% for the game, including nearly 58% in the second half, while holding Catawba to just 39% shooting. Fields led Catawba with 22 points with Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) adding 14. Kendrick Johnson (Orangeburg, SC) posted a double-double for Newberry with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also had four blocked shots.
