Baseball Falls To Lenoir-Rhyne 8-7
HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne pounded out 16 hits and defeated visiting Catawba 8-7 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field. The Bears improve to 5-4, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-1.
Max Loveland (Bradenton, FL) led the Bears with three hits, including a go-ahead two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. Loveland also pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the year.
With the score tied at one, Lenoir-Rhyne broke through with four runs in its half of the fifth inning highlighted by Alex Cooks' (Tampa, Fla.) two-run single. Catawba stormed back with six runs in the top of the sixth. The outburst included a two-run double by Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan) and a RBI triple from Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) to help the Indians forge ahead by a 7-5 score.
The Bears answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the win. Rob Knight (Sterling Heights, MI) cut the margin to 7-6 with a solo home run before Loveland's four-bagger. Evan Taylor (Charlotte, NC) added four hits while Cooks finished with three hits and two RBI.
Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) joined Hohn with two hits for Catawba. Zach Glass (Salisbury, NC) also picked up three hits for LR.
