Softball Splits Doubleheader With Mount Olive
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split a softball doubleheader with visiting Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won the first game 11-3 with the Trojans taking game two 9-3. The Lady Indians now stand at 2-2 on the season, while Mount Olive is 1-1.
Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) grabbed the win in the opener, allowing five hits and one earned run over the five innings. She struck out six. Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) combined for seven RBI .
Mount Olive took the early lead on a two-out, two-run single by Robbin Kennedy (Chesapeake, VA) in the first inning. Catawba answered right back in its first as Marshall singled home two runs and Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) homered for a 3-2 lead.
Catawba struck with two outs in the second to take a 7-2 edge. Baker doubled home two runs and Marshall followed with a two-run homer. The Lady Indians ended the game in the fifth as Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) doubled home a pair of runs and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) drew a bases loaded walk to force home the game-ending run.
Catawba collected a dozen hits in the opener with Geouge, Baker, Marshall and Thornburg each picking up two hits. Marshall had four RBI and Baker added three. Kennedy had two hits for the Trojans.
The Lady Indians led 1-0 after an inning of the nightcap as Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) scored on a wild pitch, but Mount Olive scored four times in the third to take a lead it would not surrender. With two outs, Ericka Taylor (Farmville, NC) singled home two runs and Katie Nalley (Bowid, MD) also had a two-run single.
Catawba scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, on a double by Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and a single by Baker, but the Trojans stayed in front and put the game away in the seventh with three runs.
Kristin Ware (Lancaster, CA) earned the win. She scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs over five innings. Jenny Jackson (Fremont, NC) tossed two innings of hitless relief for the save.
Kelly Minshew (Stantonsburg, NC) had three of the 12 hits for the Trojans in the nightcap. Kennedy and Nalley each had two hits. Funderburke led Catawba with three hits.
