Whitley's Late Three-Pointer Lifts Women's Basketball To Win At Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Junior Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to cap a rally from 13 points down in the final six minutes and give Catawba an 84-83 win over host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The win improves Catawba to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 12-12 and 5-8.
Catawba trailed 77-64 with 6:19 left then went on a 10-0 run, that started with a Whitley three-pointer, to trim the deficit to 77-74 with 4:45 to go. Catawba would cut the lead to one at 78-77 on a free throw by Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) at the 3:12 mark and again on a jumper by Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) with 1:54 remaining.
Jessica Blanford (Concord, NC) hit two free throws with 1:37 to go to five Mars Hill an 82-79 edge and after a layup by Hicks, Brittini Young (Ramsuer, NC) hit one of two at the line with 14 seconds left for an 83-81 lead. After a timeout, Catawba was able to free Whitley in the corner for her game-winning shot. Young missed a desperation heave from half court at the end that bounced off the front of the rim.
Mars Hill used an 8-0 run early in the second half to go up 65-56 when Ariel Okunowo (Decatur, GA) drained back to back three-pointers at the 12:01 mark. A Young shot from behind the arc gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 75-62, with 7:30 left in the game.
Hicks finished posted a double-double with a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Higgins had 13 points and four assists. Kisha Long added 12 points with Whitley netting 11 points and Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) 10.
Okunowo scored a season-high 21 points and was 8-12 from the field. Young poured in 16 points and Shamia Terry (Greenville, SC) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
